If you’re a cooking fan, then you surely noticed that a lot of recipes will either call for a number of ounces of grapefruit sections, or the juice of one grapefruit, for example. This might make you wonder how much juice would a grapefruit hold. The same goes for sections. How many sections are there in a normally-sized grapefruit?
As we did so many times in the past, we took it upon ourselves to find out just how many sections and how much juice would a grapefruit hold. To do this, we went for a medium-sized fruit, which was about 12.5 cm (5 inches) wide, with a weight of 1 pound, and went ahead with the tests. When you open a grapefruit, you will usually notice that it has 12 sections. Squeezing it will result in about one cup of juice, in the case of a medium grapefruit. A grapefruit should usually give roughly three tablespoons of zest, although this type of zest is used a lot less than the one coming from lime, lemon, or orange.
Not a lot of people know this, but the grapefruit was actually first found in Jamaica, around the Caribbean Island, where it grew naturally. It received the name grapefruit because it grew just like a bunch of grapes. Nowadays, around 70% of all grapefruits produced around the world come from the state of Florida.
Keep in mind that although they have a lot of benefits, just like other fruits, grapefruits still interact negatively when mixed with certain types of prescription medication. And in fact, when fruits started to be documented as interfering with certain medications, grapefruits were among the first ones to get on this list, especially for chemotherapy patients, transplant patients that took prescription medication, and cholesterol-lowering medication users.
